Advertising the Legal Profession
Regardless of its form, attorney advertising or lawyer advertising has a long and complex history. From the beginning of their careers, lawyers have always tried to regulate themselves. Law professionals are extremely conscious and sensitive to its public image and on how the people perceive them. Unfortunately, throughout the history, the image of the legal profession has been unacceptably low with the general public perceiving law professionals as greedy, corrupting and selfish. The recent surge of legal dramas and high profile trials on television have only helped increase the law profession’s scrutiny of itself as well as in its regulations regarding legal advertising.
Attorney advertising or legal advertising of any form must follow a code of ethics. Such ethics include not placing misleading or false information in advertisements that can misrepresent the law professional or the firm, and give potential clients a false impression of the firm or lawyer. It is also illegal to directly solicit clients. Shock advertisements are also considered unethical when it comes to attorney advertising. Hence, a reputable lawyer should avoid any form of advertisement that offends or startles its target audience by violating norms for personal ideals and social values.
When choosing an advertising company to work with you in promoting your firm, it is essential to look for a reputable company that specializes in legal advertising.
